Scope of the workshop

This workshop/school is intended to provide a gentle and progressive introduction to semi-consistent NLTE modelling of stellar atmospheres (i.e. based on an underlying LTE model atmosphere).
Lectures will be given in the mornings and practical exercises with current NLTE codes will be carried out on computers in the afternoon.
Lectures will address a general introduction to NLTE, microscopic processes, atomic data, a description of three NLTE codes (KIEL code, DETAIL and SURFACE) and the NLTE analysis of stellar spectra (see the programme).
The need for this NLTE workshop emerged at the end of the ATLAS12 workshop, held in Trieste in July 2005. In particular accurate NLTE corrections to LTE abundances for lines commonly used for abundance work are needed. However, attendance of the ATLAS12 workshop is not a prerequisite for prospective applicants.

The number of participants is limited to 30 because of limited space for practical exercises in the afternoons. The workshop/school is aimed at postgraduate students, post-docs and researchers working in the field of stellar atmospheres who wish to get acquainted with semi-consistent NLTE modelling. Limited support will be available for those participants with insufficient financial support from their home institution.

Please use the registration page to apply. The deadline for registration is 28 February, 2007. Now that the deadline is over individuals interested in attending the workshop are still encouraged to apply using the registration page as we foresee the possibility of a second school in 2008

Posters

Participants may present a short contribution in the form of a poster. Poster sessions will be accomodated during morning and afternoon breaks.
